Music at Lancaster Cathedral

“Cantemus ad Dominum!” - Let us sing to the Lord!

The Lancaster Cathedral Music Trust was launched in early 2008, with the intention of establishing a source of funding to provide for development of the Cathedral’s music, and to support music in the medium-long term.

Why money is needed

The Cathedral needs to raise money for a number of expenses:

· To provide scholarships for musicians (both instrumentalists and singers) and, where appropriate, to provide allowances and wages to music staff. This will not only benefit the Cathedral, but will provide opportunities for gifted young musicians in the Lancaster area.

· To pay for sheet music and licenses for the use of music

· To pay for the ongoing maintenance of the organ and other musical instruments and equipment

· To begin to establish outreach ventures, so as to share the Cathedral’s musical resources with the local community.

Sources of funding

The Cathedral has a number of potential sources of funding with which to support its musical development:

· Donations and legacies: The Music Trust relies heavily on the generosity of parishioners, visitors and those who wish to support liturgical music. · Concerts and fundraising events: Money from some of the Cathedral’s concerts is used to support the Music Trust; fundraising events are also held to support the fund. Click here for more about Cathedral concerts and events.

· Grants: The Music Trust is actively seeking grants from organisations that support church music or the provision of music more widely.
