Choirs and Musicians at Lancaster Cathedral

Here you can find out more about the choirs and groups of musicians who help to provide music at Lancaster Cathedral. At the foot of this page there are also details of vacant positions for those who wish to get involved.

Cathedral Choristers

The Choristers sing on average every six weeks at the Cathedral’s main Sunday Mass. They are taken from the Cathedral Primary School and are chosen by invitation. Formed as a boy/girl choir three years ago, they continue to grow in confidence. They have performed music by Saint-Saens, Elgar and our own Dr J. H. Reginald Dixon. They number around twenty, with five chosen as senior choristers; some are former Cathedral Primary pupils who have moved on to secondary schools.

Cathedral Ladies’ Choir

We have a very faithful group of Ladies in our choir which sings at Mass most Sundays. Most live in the parish or have connections to the Cathedral itself. We hope that in future the Cathedral Ladies will grow in number and be a choir in its own fully-fledged form. If you are interested in joining, contact the Cathedral.

Cathedral Gentlemen

The Gentlemen assist the Ladies in the regular Sunday singing. They often sing the psalm and, like the Ladies, seek to grow in number. New members are always welcome. Interested? Contact us.

Schola Gregoriana

The Schola Gregoriana (or School of Gregorian Chant) was established in 2007 following a workshop by the inspirational world expert Dr Mary Berry.

The Schola exists to give glory to God by singing the Chant of the Church, in accordance with the Tradition of the Church, the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the exhortations of all the recent Popes.

The Schola now sings at the regular extraordinary form Masses at the Cathedral, as well as at other Masses organised by the Latin Mass Society.

We rehearse prior to the Sunday Mass, as well as working individually on the chant in advance, and having occasional additional rehearsals.

If you are interested in joining the Schola or learning more about Chant, please speak to the Director of the Schola after Mass, or contact him at this address:

Andrew Plasom-Scott, Prospect House, Helton, Penrith, Cumbria, CA10 2QA

Telephone 01931 712955 or email the Cathedral office.

Germani Singers

The new Cathedral choral ensemble seeks to run from January 2009. It takes its name from the organ virtuoso Fernando Germani, who for many years was organist at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome – hence the link with our St Peter’s in name and nature! The group will be made up of excellent singers SATB and will welcome members primarily by invitation, though anyone who wishes to join can speak to the Director of Music. The group will sing occasionally at the Cathedral and will specialise in polyphonic and Romantic/Modern French choral music.

Cathedral Brass

The Cathedral has its own Brass group and aims to build up its profile in the near future. Established in 2008, it has already contributed to music at some major feast days. The group’s Master of Brass is Christopher Blaylock, an excellent trumpeter who studied at the RNCM. He also plays regularly with the Longridge Brass Band. He and his wife Carol (also a fine player) are regularly in demand for solo performances and have deputised with major brass bands.

Vacant Positions

Senior Cantor/Choral Conductor sought to assist the Director of Music in the running of the Cathedral Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s choir. Applications should be directed to the Cathedral office (Canon Stephen Shield or Dr Caroline Hull) or to the Director of Music. Contact us.

Choral/Organ Scholarships

Lancaster Cathedral seeks to appoint scholars to take part in the day-to-day running of music in the Cathedral. A scholarship is an ideal opportunity for music students to gain further singing/playing experience and confidence. Any interested people (age 16+) should contact the Cathedral office.
