Dr J. H. Reginald Dixon

Dr Dixon was a gifted organist and composer. He arrived at the Cathedral in 1909 (the year of the building's golden jubilee) and continued to work here until 1971, serving as organist and as musical director. This talented musician and colourful character is one of the most influential people in the history of St Peter’s.

Alongside playing the organ and overseeing music at the Cathedral, he wrote many works, perhaps most notably a setting of Cardinal Newman's 'Dream of Gerontius'.

In 2009 the Cathedral will celebrate its
150th anniversary, and will also mark 100 years since Dr Dixon arrived at the church. If you have information about or memories of Dr Dixon, we'd be delighted to hear from you. Please contact us on (01524) 384820, or email: clergy@lancastercathedral.org.uk

Dr Dixon died in 1975 and is buried in the Cathedral Cemetery.
