150 Years of St Peter’s, Lancaster: Events for 2009 |

Throughout the year events are taking place to mark the 150th anniversary of St Peter’s Cathedral. To keep an eye on what’s coming up, visit the Cathedral Diary and to see what’s been going on, try the Cathedral Blog. Below are listed some of the highlights of the year’s events. Feast of the Dedication Cathedral, 4th October The 150th anniversary of the Dedication will be celebrated with Mass at 10:30am and solemn sung Vespers at 4:40pm. Bishops from across the north of England will be present at both Mass and Vespers.
Exhibition: Curious about the Cathedral? Lancaster City Museum, 12th September - 21st November 2009 A chance to find out about the history of St Peter’s and the Catholic community in Lancaster since the Reformation, featuring many objects not usually on public display.
Flower Festival Cathedral, 26th-29th June Marking the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (28th June), the flower festival will feature arrangements inspired by the life of St Peter.
St Peter - Keeper of the Keys Grand Theatre, 18th October Following two productions earlier in the year, the final drama takes place in Lancaster’s Grand Theatre and explores St Peter’s role as keeper of the keys of heaven.
Dr J. H. Reginald Dixon Centenary Cathedral, 15th-17th May and 20th May Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Dr Dixon’s appointment, a weekend of events and an evening organ recital honour the memory of one of the Cathedral’s most colourful characters. Dr Dixon served as organist and Director of Music for over 60 years.
OTHER EVENTS IN 2009 A number of other important events which are not directly related to the 150th celebrations will be happening in 2009:
Visit of the Relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux Cathedral, 28th-30th September The relics of this great modern saint will be visiting the Cathedral as part of a tour of England and Wales. The Cathedral will be open throughout the 43-hour visit, with many visitors expected. More on the visit can be found here.
Anne Frank: A history for today Cathedral Day Chapel and Pastoral Centre, 1st-22nd July An exhibition on the life of Anne Frank, particularly suitable for school groups. More details will be given nearer the time. |
